What made you become a photographer and how did you get into the industry?

I can’t honestly say that I’m yet “in” the industry. Maybe one day! I’ve been interested in photography ever since I watched my dad develop black and white photos in a makeshift darkroom (which was in the bathroom) of our apartment in Sarajevo, when I was about 3 years old.

Describe your style of photography and what do you like to take pictures of the most?

I would say that I really enjoy macro photography — you get to see deeper into a world that you normally overlook — and this is the style that I have most experience with. However, I have to say that recently my favourite is quickly becoming studio photography, mainly taking photos of my friends or really any willing participants.

Who are your style icons-if any and what are your favourite brands?

Oh gosh! Style. Haha. I really don’t have any icons or favourite brands. I wouldn’t really want to commit myself to one particular look. I do watch a lot of What Not to Wear, though. I’d like to think I’m getting useful advice from them — haha

If we were to raid your closet, what would we find?

Lots of dark wash jeans, a couple of pairs of skinny jeans, lots of nice sweaters. Some tanktops for layering and virtually no T-shirts.

Show us a typical Ema Suvajac outfit.

A typical “Ema” outfit would consist of dark jeans, ballet flats, and a tanktop underneath a sweater with a dipping neckline. A fitted jacket on top of this, and a pashmina, of course.

There are many photographers around Toronto, how do you stand out from the rest of them?

I have yet to charge for my services….

Let’s end it with your favourite quote:

“It’s not brith, marriage, or death, but gastrulation, which is truly the most important time of your life”
- Lewis Wolpert (1986)
